This study investigated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) pollution of selected rivers in the Czech Republic. Integrated evaluation was carried out using combination of chemical and biological monitoring, in which we measured content of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) in chub bile and priority PAH in water samples obtained by exposing the semipermeable membrane devices at each location. The concentrations of 1-OHP in bile samples and sum of priority PAH in water sampler ranged from 6.8 ng mg protein−1 to 106.6 ng mg protein−1 and from 5.2 ng L−1 to 173.9 ng L−1, respectively. The highest levels of biliary metabolite and PAH in water were measured at the Odra River (the Bohumín site), which is located in relatively heavily industrialized and polluted region. Statistically significant positive correlation between biliary 1-OHP and sum of PAH in water was also obtained (P < 0.01, r s = 0.806).

Performance reference compounds (PRCs) are neutral organic compounds, introduced in a passive sampler prior deployment for the assessment of in situ sampling rate. In this study, evaluation of in situ sampling rates of 16 C-PAH-PRCs with moderate and high hydrophobicity was established to provide an overall correction factor for variations in virtual organism (VO) uptake rates of the analytes of interest. In situ sampling rate was compared to an empirical model during sampling campaign in 2011 with VO in 12 different sites along the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in China. A discrepancy was observed for high hydrophobic compounds with log K ranging from 5.18 to 6.63 where ΣPAH concentration in TGR from Huckins model (305,624 pg/L) was resulted to be roughly 2-fold higher than the alternative procedure (182,292 pg/L). A relationship between in situ sampling rates of the 16 C-PAH-PRCs (Rs, ) and log K was set up to allow then calculation of analyte sampling rate Rs (N) of various organic pollutants with log K ≤ 6.63.

Abstract. The aim of this study was to analyze the presence and concentration of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water samples from different stages of treatment and to verify the usefulness of semipermeable membrane devices for analysis of drinking water. For this purpose, study was conducted for a period of 5 months. Semipermeable membrane devices were deployed in a surface water treatment plant located in Lower Silesia (Poland). To determine the effect of water treatment on concentration of PAHs, three sampling places were chosen: raw water input, stream of water just before disinfection and treated water output. After each month of sampling SPMDs were changed for fresh ones and prepared for further analysis. Concentrations of fifteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Presented study indicates that the use of semipermeable membrane devices can be an effective tool for the analysis of aquatic environment, including monitoring of drinking water, where organic micropollutants are present at very low concentrations.
