Amphibian populations have been decreasing in urban freshwater systems in Korea. To elucidate the biological safety of treated wastewater effluent (TWE) in the Tancheon basin, the capital area of Korea, a 7-d-exposure Bombina orientalis embryo developmental toxicity assay was examined during the breeding season. In March, there were no significant differences in embryonic survival or malformation among the water samples. In July, following monsoon precipitation, embryonic lethality in TWE was significantly higher than in the upstream water sample. Malformation in TWE and TWE-mixed waters was significantly higher than in the control and upstream water samples. Tail muscle height of tadpoles also significantly decreased in TWE and TWE-mixed waters. Heavy metals were not detected in any samples. Total nitrogen, total phosphorous, and chemical oxygen demand in TWE markedly increased together with a decrease in dissolved oxygen in July. The increase in organic and inorganic loading following precipitation could have made TWE and TWE-mixed water not suitable for embryonic development. Though being managed based on physicochemical criteria, the water quality of TWE may not be sufficient to assure normal development of amphibian embryos. An amphibian developmental toxicity assay would be helpful for the water-quality management of TWE and urban freshwater systems in Korea.

ab s t r ac tSignificant decrease of boron concentration during seawater desalination is one of the more difficult, consuming and expensive tasks. Average boron concentration in the Mediterranean Sea is 4 mg/l, and due to heavy use of wastewater in irrigation the Israeli Water Authority (Ministry of Health) demands boron reduction to 0.4 mg/l maximum. The current boron removal procedure is based on two-pass reverse osmosis (RO) membrane treatment that requires pH adjustment to dissociate boric acid into borate ion. The operation is expensive, energy consuming and calls for cheaper and reliable alternatives. The current research was initiated to explore the abilities of electroflocculation (EF) to remove boron from seawater. The EF experiments were performed under batch electro-chemical reactor conditions with iron electrodes. Settling time and pH of the solution were selected as two main independent parameters. The obtained results suggest that significant boron reduction can be achieved without membrane separation technologies. The obtained drop from 4.2 to 0.8 mg/l boron after 10 min EF and 60 min sedimentation suggests that RO can be applied as a polishing stage only, needed to achieve the goal of 90% B retention. At the same time, the average 80% boron retention achieved by EF/sedimentation is encouraging and can be viewed as a valuable alternative to currently applied RO-based technology. The studies were performed on seawater from the Palmachim beach (near Rishon-Le-Zion, Israel) and were an important step in detection of possible boron removal mechanisms.

Ever increasing demands for fresh water resources have brought the reuse of treated wastewater into agendas. Wastewater has year-long potential to be used as an irrigation water source. Therefore, treated wastewater is used as irrigation water over agricultural lands and urban landscapes, as process water in industrial applications, as back-up water in environmental applications in water resources and wetlands of dry regions. The present study was conducted to investigate the possible use of domestic wastewater treated through pilot-scale constructed wetland of Adana-Karaisalı with dominant Mediterranean climate in irrigation of marigold (Tagetes erecta), commonly used over urban landscapes. Experiments were carried out between the dates May-November 2008 for 7 months with fresh water and treated wastewater. Plant growth parameters (plant height, plant diameter, number of branches) and flowering parameters (number of flowers, flower diameter, flower pedicle thickness) were monitored in monthly basis. Results revealed positive impacts of treated wastewater irrigations on plant growth during the initial 5 months between May-September but negative impacts in October and November. Similarly, treated wastewater irrigations had positive impacts on flowering parameters during the initial 3 months but had negative impacts during the subsequent 4 months. Such a case indicated shortened visual efficiencies of marigold. Therefore, treated wastewater can be used as an alternative water resource in irrigation of annual flowers, but better results can be attained by mixing treated wastewater with fresh water at certain ratios.
