Wastewater effluent characteristics from Moroccan textile industry

Abstract: The objectives of this work were to carry out a complete characterization of textile wastewater, resulting from a textile unit located in the Marrakesh region. A physico-chemical characterization has been performed, focused on organic and toxicological aspects. The cladoceran Daphnia magna was used as the sensor organism and lethal concentration as a criterion to measure the toxicity of textile wastewater. The physico-chemical and toxicological status of a local textile effluent showed considerable values limi… Show more

“…Among the five different industries, wastewater of dyeing industry contains higher pH values 9.0 and wastewater of leather industry contains higher EC and TDS values of 4307 µS cm -1 and 5209 mg L -1 , respectively. The use of sodium carbonate and salt in the dyeing process and electrolytes in the bleaching process causes an increase in EC of the wastewater (Mountassir et al, 2013). Kamal et al (2015) who found almost similar pH value (9.7) like this study in dyeing industry.…”

“…The samples for microbial analysis were analyzed within 24 h after sampling while those for the heavy metals were preserved in a refrigerator maintained at 4°C after being acidified with nitric acid to lower pH to a value of less than 2 (Mountassir et al 2013).…”

“…According to Mountassir et al, 2013, Kacha et al, 1997, this wastewater is also characterized by high pH, high temperature, and organic load as well as extreme colors. These carcinogenic and mutagenic pollutants (Sandra et al, 2000) are resistant to biodegradation and possess a potential for inhibiting microbial activity.…”
