Paleoaltimetric reconstructions of the southern Tibetan Plateau (TP) are crucial to understand the processes and mechanisms concomitant with the tectonic collision of the Indian and Eurasian continental plates. We measured the branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (brGDGT) indices from 88 surface soils from the southern TP and found that alkaline soils exhibited lower MBT′ and MBT′/CBT‐derived MAT (mean annual temperature), while MBT′/CBT‐derived MAT exhibited a strong correlation with altitude (R2 = 0.84; n = 63) for all of the localities with neutral and acidic soils. Differently, we found that MBT′5ME‐derived MAT exhibited a strong relation with altitude even though a mixture of alkaline samples (R2 = 0.72; n = 83). As a result, two regional calibrations were developed, including a neutral and acidic soil calibration based on MBT′/CBT‐MAT and a calibration suitable for both acidic and alkaline soils based on MBT′5ME‐MAT for the southern TP. Based on this new soil calibration data set, and a recent global soil calibration data set founded on MBT′5ME, we calculated paleo‐MAT of ∼9.49 ± 1.15 to 10.38 ± 1.47°C at ∼15 Ma, respectively, for the Namling Basin. Applying these soil calibrations, the paleoaltitudes of the Namling Basin can be calculated to have been between 4.36 ± 0.41 km above sea level (asl) and 4.43 ± 0.36 km asl at ∼15 Ma, respectively, similar to the paleoaltitudes of ∼4.7–5.4 km asl at ∼15 Ma inferred from the floral physiognomy of Namling Basin fossils and stable isotopes. These findings would suggest the applicability of MBT′/CBT (and/or MBT′5ME) indices as paleotopographic and paleotemperature proxies on the southern TP.

Orbitally modulated insolation is thought to be among the key mechanisms driving ice sheet change. Yet, late Pleistocene ice sheets attained maximum marginal extents prior to summer insolation minima, suggesting that additional mechanisms influenced ice growth and decay. Continuous orbital‐scale terrestrial temperature records can help define the role that temperature near ice sheet margins plays on the timing and structure of glacial maxima. We hypothesize, based on a 360 kyr long air temperature record from the Chinese Loess Plateau and shorter records from North America and Europe, that midlatitude terrestrial temperature influenced the rate of ice sheet growth prior to and during glacial maxima; cold conditions prior to glacial maxima enhanced ice sheet growth, while warming during glacial maxima inhibited further growth, despite low summer insolation. Thus, the midlatitude surface energy budget may be an important component of understanding and modeling ice volume, particularly for intervals prior to and during glacial maxima, when ice sheet margins reached midlatitudes.

The Eocene-Oligocene Transition (EOT) marks the shift from greenhouse to icehouse conditions at 34 Ma, when a permanent ice sheet developed on Antarctica. Climate modeling studies have recently assessed the drivers of the transition globally. Here we revisit those experiments for a detailed study of the southern high latitudes in comparison to the growing number of mean annual sea surface temperature (SST) and mean air temperature (MAT) proxy reconstructions, allowing us to assess proxy-model temperature agreement and refine estimates for the magnitude of the pCO forcing of the EOT. We compile and update published proxy temperature records on and around Antarctica for the late Eocene (38-34 Ma) and early Oligocene (34-30 Ma). Compiled SST proxies cool by up to 3°C and MAT by up to 4°C between the timeslices. Proxy data were compared to previous climate model simulations representing pre- and post-EOT, typically forced with a halving of pCO. We scaled the model outputs to identify the magnitude of pCO change needed to drive a commensurate change in temperature to best fit the temperature proxies. The multi-model ensemble needs a 30 or 33% decrease in pCO, to best fit MAT or SST proxies respectively, a difference of just 3%. These proxy-model intercomparisons identify pCO as the primary forcing of EOT cooling, with a magnitude (-200 or -243 ppmv) approaching that of the pCO proxies (-150 ppmv). However individual model estimates span -66 to -375 ppmv, thus proxy-model uncertainties are dominated by model divergence.
