“…Vismia cauliflora extracts demonstrated high capacity to scavenge ONOO À and all parts presented IC 50 values lower than 5.8 mg/mL (without NaHCO 3 ) and 9.8 mg/mL (in the presence of 25 mM NaHCO 3 ) ( Table 3). The flower and stem bark extracts of V. cauliflora exhibit slight higher efficiency than Juglans regia leaf extract (1.66 mg/mL), a plant used in folk medicine for the treatment of several disorders as skin inflammations and ulcers (Almeida et al, 2008b).…”

“…Therefore, the extracts that are able to eliminate hydrogen peroxide may be significant for human health and have the potential to be used to protect pharmaceutical and food system (Sen et al, 2013). Concerning the scavenging capacity of V. cauliflora against H 2 O 2 , the flower extract was more effective than all other parts and also showed higher efficiency than standards of gallic acid, quercetin, ascorbic acid (Table 3), ellagic acid (108.3 mg/mL) , Juglans regia leaf extracts (383 mg/mL) (Almeida et al, 2008b), and Meyna spinosa leaf extracts, a traditional medicinal plant from India (126.8 mg/mL) (Sen et al, 2013). In general, the IC 50 values to scavenge H 2 O 2 are higher in comparison with other ROS and RNS and sometimes the IC 50 could be not achieved in the maximum concentration tested Sen et al, 2013).…”

“…This ONOO À scavenging capacity is equivalent to that of other strong natural scavengers like nordihydroguaiaretic acid 18) and a Juglans regia leaf extract. 19) These four effective extracts were then selected for a further investigation of the inhibition effects on DNA single breakage, tyrosine nitration and LDL oxidation.…”

“…Walnut leaves have been widely used in folk medicine for the treatment of skin inflammations, venous insufficiency, haemorrhoidal symptomatology, hyperhidrosis and ulcers and for its antidiarrheic, antihelmintic, antiseptic, depurative and astringent properties (Almeida et al 2008;Eidi et al 2013).…”

“…Based on these traditional uses and from the wide availability of walnut leaves in abundant amounts, numerous studies have been conducted in recent years related to the content of the leaves in bioactive compounds, their antioxidant and antiseptic properties, in order to justify, at least partially, their therapeutic uses (Pereira et al 2007;Almeida et al 2008;Amaral et al 2008;Carvalho et al 2010;Cosmulescu et al 2014).…”
