Abstract: We previously showed that intravenous total parenteral nutrition supplemented with nucleosides and nucleotides (NS/NT) promoted ulcer healing in rats with indomethacin-induced ileitis. The present study evaluated whether dietary NT supplementation would similarly affect ulcer healing in this model. Female Lewis rats were randomized into either control or experimental groups receiving yeast RNA containing NT or arginine, glutamine, fish oil, guar gum, or a combination of yeast RNA+arginine diets. Ileitis was in… Show more

“…In pediatric nutrition, it has been demonstrated that nucleotide supplementation reduces the number of episodes of diarrhea [ 30 ]. Other studies have shown that dietary nucleotides have beneficial effects on the development of gastrointestinal tract during recovery from diarrhea [ 11 , 31 ]. Results of these studies implies that dietary sources of nucleotides play an important role in developing, maintaining, and enhancing the immune system, which explains why in the current study fecal score was higher in the CON group compared to nucleotides supplemented groups.…”

“…Arginine supplementation enhances intestinal growth and development in weanling piglets [14]. Dietary supplementation with arginine stimulates small intestinal mucosal recovery following experimental radiation enteritis [15] and accelerates ulcer healing in experimental ulcerative ileitis [16]. In a recent study, we have shown that oral arginine decreases intestinal injury caused by lipopolysacharide endotoxemia in a rat [9].…”

“…Arginine and NO are critical to the normal physiology of the gastrointestinal tract. Several studies have suggested that endogenous formation of nitric oxide maintains the mucosal integrity of the intestine and protects the gut from injuries from blood-borne toxins and tissue destructive mediators [7,8]. In a recent study, we have shown that oral arginine decreases intestinal injury caused by lipopolysacharide endotoxemia in a rat [9].…”

“…To enhance the activation effect of eNOS, we included an l-arginine supplementation. This amino acid, the precursor of NO, provides a greater amount of substrate for enzyme activity 4,5,8,9 .…”

“…It has been observed that, although the NO released in the endothelium is essential in the modulation of peripheral vascular tone, l-arginine plays an important role in endothelium-dependent relaxation, a decisive issue in the prevention of tissue damage 4,5,8,9 .…”
