Vulnerability mapping as a tool to manage the environmental impacts of oil and gas extraction

Abstract: Various biophysical and socio-economic impacts may be associated with unconventional oil and gas (UOG) extraction. A vulnerability map may assist governments during environmental assessments, spatial planning and the regulation of UOG extraction, as well as decision-making around UOG extraction in fragile areas. A regional interactive vulnerability map was developed for UOG extraction in South Africa. This map covers groundwater, surface water, vegetation, socio-economics and seismicity as mapping themes, base… Show more

“…The challenges related to water linkages within the population-environment-development nexus and the policy implications of unconventional oil and gas extraction have been studied, highlighting the complex interplay between environmental concerns, development, and policy (Esterhuyse et al, 2016). Moreover, the development of enforcement mechanisms for managing the environmental impacts of oil and gas extraction has been emphasized, indicating the importance of aligning policies with environmental considerations (Esterhuyse et al, 2017). In conclusion, the regulatory frameworks in Africa and the USA exhibit distinct enforcement mechanisms and socio-economic implications.…”

“…Based on our previous study [31][32][33], the TPH concentration of aged oily sludge was analysed by accelerated solvent extractor (ASE300, Dionex, USA). About 10 g of oily sludge was extracted with 60 ml of trichloromethane using an accelerated solvent extractor.…”
