Forward Error Correction (FEC) can be exploited to realize reliable video multicast over Wi-Fi with high video quality. We propose reliable video multicast over Wi-Fi networks with coordinated multiple Access Points (APs) to enhance video quality. By coordinating multiple APs, each AP can transmit entirely or partially different FEC-encoded packets so that a multicast receiver can benefit from both spatial and time diversities. The proposed schemes can enlarge the satisfactory video multicast region by exploiting the AP diversity, thus serving more multicast receivers located at cell edge with satisfactory video quality. We propose a resource-allocation algorithm for FEC-code rate adaptation, utilizing the limited wireless resource more efficiently while enhancing video quality. We also introduce the method for estimating the video packet delivery ratio after FEC decoding. The effectiveness of the proposed schemes is comparatively evaluated via extensive simulation and experimentation. The proposed schemes are observed to enhance the ratio of satisfied users by up to 37.1% compared to the conventional single AP multicast scheme.

The basic mechanism of HCCA (HCF Control Channel Access) has been introduced in IEEE 802.11e standard to support the parameterized QoS by allocating a fixed duration based on the requested TSPEC requirements during the admission control process. However, the variable bit rate (VBR) traffic (e.g., MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 video) cannot be surely supported. In this study, the adjustable TXOP mechanism for supporting video transmission, ATMV, has been proposed. The mechanism adaptively adjusts the TXOP duration according to a finite state machine based on feedback queue size information. The mechanism aims for prompt serving burst packets, generated from the incoming video frames, which finally minimizes the packet delay. Both system performance (mean packet delay, TXOP loss factor, and channel occupancy) and video quality (PSNR and MOS values) have been evaluated from five video clips in three categories by using the network simulator, NS2, with EvalVid toolset. The results reveal that the proposed mechanism performs well for rapid movement video category and adequately supports for other video categories.

Multicast is an efficient way of transmitting the same set of data to multiple interested users. Unlike the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) cellular standards, for Wi-Fi, there is no standardised solution for reliable multicast data transmission. Multicast packets are delivered to multiple users as a broadcast service without support for automatic repeat request. Hence, multicast transmission often results in high packet loss. In order to improve the reliability of multicast delivery, a fixed low-speed (robust) transmission mode can be used. However, this results in the inefficient use of scarce and valuable radio bandwidth. This paper presents a reliable and efficient Wi-Fi multicast delivery solution for use in challenging outdoor environments. An application layer forward error correction (AL-FEC)-enabled data carousel is proposed to enhance reliability. For multicast transmission, we demonstrate that limitations in the Wi-Fi clients are a major source of packet loss, even in ideal channel conditions. Client limitations (particularly data rate limitations) were found to vary as a function of modulation and coding mode, Raptor code parameters and multicast server rate. Our initial Raptor-enabled carousel designs are based on computer simulations and lab-based trials. Analysis is then extended to field trials using a practical implementation of the recommended design. These trials were performed in central Bristol with parameters such as received signal level, packet loss traces and file download times recorded at the clients. Finally, we compare our site-specific simulated results against real-world measurements.
