In order to study the scale effect in wave-structure interactions and the role that structure-related parameters (tension T or bending stiffness EI) plays, riser model tests under regular waves were conducted using the model with multiple geometric scales (1:15, 1:12 and 1:9) in a wave basin. The riser model used is a novel structural design combing the outer polyvinyl chloride pipe with the core steel rod which could be simplified as a cantilever beam. Different initial tension T acting on the riser are tested by adjusting the slotted weight. The results show that the amplitude varies in a cubic fashion with the distance from the fixed end. In addition, the influence of the wave period and top tension T on the amplitude are investigated, which ultimately leads to a dimensionless number π1 = KCd·TL2/EI where KC is the classical Keulegan–Carpenter number (KC), EI shows the bending stiffness of the riser model and L gives the pipe length. With the KC number revised to take the distance from the fixed end into the calculation, this parameter provides a good measure in estimating the amplitudes of the riser vibrations induced by the waves.

This experimental work’s goal was to investigate the mode-I fracture toughness behavior of a hybrid composite material made of woven sisal and glass fibers under mode-I loading circumstances to gauge the material’s resistance to fracture behavior. The sisal plant was painstakingly stripped of its fibers. For the sisal fiber surface treatment, 5% NaOH was utilized. Next, treated fibers were weaved by hand to create the woven sisal fiber. Using the hand lay-up technique and the ASTM D5045-99 standard, compact tension specimens were created. The findings indicated that, under mode I loading circumstances, the mode I fracture toughness value of a specimen with a thickness of 5 mm has a (KIC) of 18.34 MPa. m. By determining a material’s resistance to fracture under mode I stress conditions—a condition that is employed in a variety of engineering applications—it is a valuable parameter for developing and establishing preconditions for engineering applications. The manufactured hybrid specimens’ performance and applications for various engineering materials for construction (such as tables, ceilings, and partitions), lightweight vehicle parts (like boards), and replacing synthetic materials with natural fibers in engineering applications were demonstrated by the results of the fracture toughness test.

Experimental Study of VIV Characteristics of Free Hanging PVC Pipe under Forced Oscillation Conditions

A series of model tests was carried out to investigate the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) characteristics of a free hanging PVC pipe under forced oscillation conditions. The prescribed displacement with a period and amplitude was forced at the top of the riser. The motion of the riser along its length was measured with underwater cameras in three dimensions. The top-excited responses in the inline direction and vortex-induced vibration in the cross-flow direction were examined in the time and frequency domains. Multi-peak frequencies in the VIV were demonstrated to be strongly dependent upon the Keulegan-Carpenter number, corresponding with the results of Blevin. It was found that the Reynolds numbers (excitation period) was a critical parameter for the dominant VIV characteristics, even under the condition of using the same Keulegan-Carpenter number, under the top-excited condition. In the resonance at the nth natural frequency by the forced-motion induced VIV frequency, the riser responded with a large amplitude and forced frequency, dominantly in the VIV CF direction.
