Vortex flow generator utilizing synthetic jets by diaphragm vibration

Abstract: This paper develops a millimeter scale fully packaged device in which a vortex flow of high velocity is generated inside a chamber. Under the actuation by a lead zirconate titanate (PZT) diaphragm, a flow circulates with increasing velocity after each actuating circle to form a vortex in a cavity named as the vortex chamber. At each cycle, the vibration of the PZT diaphragm creates a small net air flow through a rectifying nozzle, generates a synthetic jet which propagates by a gradual circulation toward the v… Show more

“…On the other hand, the second category, the synthetic jet technique, has been used to rectify fluid flow by a chain of vortexes [17] [18]. In this technique, flow in a valveless pump is basically generated by the interaction of the pairs of counter-rotating vortexes at the edge of an orifice.…”

“…The approach based jet flow has been recently applied in airflow control [2], propulsion technology [3] and bio-electronic device [4]- [6]. In parallel, several other techniques were also developed to generate jet flow in a confined space for the fluidic gyroscope, such as the vibration by a lead zircona-titanate (PZT) diaphragm [7], [8]; the electrokinetic using electro-conjugate fluid [9] and the thermal convection from a locally heated region [10]. In spite of efforts, those techniques are either instable while working with a linear acceleration or complicated in design [11].…”

“…Vortex-based inertial fluidic systems presented in several recent publications include vortex based inertial fluidic system and fluidic amplifier [1]- [3] and vortex based gyrometer [4]. While fluidic gyroscopes are typically categorized as jet flow gyroscope and thermal gas gyroscope with sufficient literature reports on laminar gas stream, corona discharge or thermal expansion principles [5]- [12], there has not been any adequate technical information disclosed for vortex gyrometer.…”
