“…On the evidence available both congenital and acquired factors appear to be aetiologically significant; it is probable that in this case congenital redundancy of the sigmoid colon was the primary lesion. It is possible that secondary contraction of the base of the mesentery was an additional factor; the importance of this latter factor has been stressed by Farringer and Wilson (1955) who also reported one case in a child aged less than ten years. Throughout the literature many references are made to the fact that sigmoid volvulus has a different incidence in different countries; also it has been suggested that dietetic factors are probably significant in explaining the different incidence.…”
