Voluntary Use of Information Technology: An Analysis and Synthesis of the Literature

Abstract: Voluntariness is recognized as an important influence on individual and collective technology acceptance. We conducted a comprehensive review of this literature and identified a rich set of voluntariness concepts and methods of operationalization. However, while considerable empirical evidence is reported in the literature, our review also revealed inconsistent results concerning the relationship between voluntariness and other concepts. Against that backdrop, we synthesized the literature into three types of … Show more

“…In our study, we focus on the volitional context of use. We understand voluntariness as the realisable voluntariness and as defined by Tsai et al to be “the freedom (both facilitated and inhibited) in the technological environment and the social environment for the individual not to use the technology” (Tsai, Compeau, & Meister, 2017, p. 152). This definition allows us to capture and analyse behavioural outcomes that exist along a spectrum between continuance and discontinuance, and where users have agency and are able to exercise it.…”

“…The perception of voluntariness has also been found to be important predictor of intentions. Voluntariness is conceptualised as an individuals' subjective perception of their freedom to use or avoid using a new technology (Moore & Benbasat, 1991;Tsai, Compeau, & Meister, 2017;Wu & Lederer, 2009). Perceived voluntariness has been investigated as a direct predictor of intention to use information technologies, with negative relationships typically hypothesised and found.…”
