Volumetric changes in the lumpectomy cavity during whole breast irradiation after breast conserving surgery

Abstract: PurposeThis study was performed to evaluate the change in the lumpectomy cavity volumes before and after whole breast radiation therapy (WBRT) and to identify factors associated with the change of volume.Materials and MethodsFrom September 2009 to April 2010, the computed tomography (CT) simulation data from 70 patients obtained before and after WBRT was evaluated. The lumpectomy cavity volumes were contoured based on surgical clips, seroma, and postoperative changes. Significant differences in the data from p… Show more

“…After superficial closure of the excision cavity, the tumor bed often appears as a seroma [9,10], which makes target definition more clear and consistent. Seroma volume (SV) is well-known to typically shrink with time [11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. Therefore, an ideal target volume should differ in each PBI fraction.…”

“…Total averaged excised volume was 33 cc. This compares to the reported 40-60 cc average in multiple studies 5,10,11 . Of the 68 cases of invasive cancer, 14 of the lumpectomies were identi ed to have at least 1 positive margin on nal pathology.…”
