Volumetric bone mineral density using peripheral quantitative computed tomography in Japanese women

Abstract: The present study evaluated a commercial device for peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) and examined the age-related changes in normal Japanese women. The volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) of the distal radius [integral bone mineral density (BMDI), trabecular bone mineral density (BMDT) and cortical with subcortical bone mineral density (BMDSC)] was measured using pQCT (Norland-Stratec XCT960) in 617 healthy women aged 20-79 years and 75 subjects with osteoporosis aged 60-89 years who exhib… Show more

“…In our Japanese population the annual rate of bone loss was 1.28% in BD, which is within the range of bone loss in a Caucasian population, whereas the annual percent change of TBD was 71.37%, which is higher than that reported in a Caucasian population. After age 50 years there was a decline of 1.1% per year in both BD and TBD in the previous study of Japanese women [31], which is in good agreement with the results of our study. The overall decrease in BD between the ages of 50 and 79 years was 28.6% in our study and 32% in the other report [31].…”

In this study we asked whether bone mass measurement and the geometric parameters of bone at the ultradistal radius by pQCT can discriminate women with vertebral fractures, irrespective of the lack of regional specificity, and attempted to identify the cut-off level most effective for the discrimination of spinal fracture.…”

“…Recent studies have demonstrated that radial BMD using SPA, DXA and pQCT can differentiate between normal and osteoporotic women [21][22][23][24]. The differences between the pQCT values of premenopausal women and osteoporotic women in our study were expressed as T-scores ( Table 4).…”

“…이 중 DEXA를 통해 요추 및 대퇴부의 골밀도를 측정하여 골다공증 여부를 판단하는 것이 가장 일반화된 진단 방법이다 [6]. DEXA는 오차율 3% 이내의 비교적 높은 정확도를 제공하고 [7], 측정이 용이하여 골다 공증을 판단하기 위한 우수성 모델(Gold Standard)로 간주 되어 왔다 [8].…”
