Voltammetric Determination of N,N‐Dimethyl‐4‐amine‐carboxyazobenzene at a Silver Solid Amalgam Electrode

Abstract: The voltammetric behavior of N,N-dimethyl-4-amino-2'-carboxyazobenzene was investigated by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) at a mercury meniscus-modified silver solid amalgam electrode (m-AgSAE). Conditions have been found for its determination by DPV at m-AgSAE in the concentration range of 0.4 to 15 mmol L À1.

“…Among other advantages of amalgam electrodes belongs mechanical robustness that allows their application in flow liquid systems (e.g., flow injection analysis (FIA) or high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)) as working electrodes of electrochemical detectors. determination of organic compounds like nucleic acids [11], cysteine [12] and cysteine containing peptides [13], azocompounds [14], very low levels of DNA [15] including the detection of its hybridization [16] and possible damage [17]. Further, m-AgSAE or m-AuSAE were used for the determination of 1-NN, 2-NN [18], 2-, 3-, and 4-nitrobiphenyl [19], nitro-and m-dinitrobenzene [6,7].…”

“…In absence of specific interactions between the analyte and silver the DPV peak potentials on m-AgSAE and hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) are nearly the same. This electrode was found suitable for the determination of submicromolar concentrations of selected nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are typical representatives of polarographically active environmental carcinogens [22] and for the determination of selected genotoxic azo dyes [23] (see Table 1). For the sake of illustration, DP voltammograms of N,N-dimethyl-4-amino-2′-carboxyazobenzene at AgSAE are depicted in Fig.…”

“…Silver solid amalgam electrode (AgSAE) is a typical representative of this type of working electrodes and is (esp. its m-AgSAE form) very convenient for common analytical applications [4,7]. The meniscus and the polished AgSAE exhibit high hydrogen overvoltage, in some cases comparable with that of the hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) [3, 5 -6].…”
