Voiding Dysfunction and Urodynamic Findings in Patients with Cervical Spondylotic Spinal Stenosis Compared with Severity of the Disease

Abstract: A group of 30 consecutive patients (26 men and 4 women, mean age 51 years), with clinically and radiologically verified cervical spondylosis causing radiculopathy and/or myelopathy, were questioned about voiding symptoms, examined urodynamically and subjected to tests of tibial somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP). Seventeen patients (61%) complained of irritative bladder symptoms and detrusor hyperactivity was demonstrated urodynamically in 13 (46%). Three (11%) experienced difficulty in emptying the bladder… Show more

“…The controversial results may depend on the severity of spinal cord damage and the underlying disorders. It seems likely that LUTS occur independent of motor and sensory disturbances of the lower extremities as indicated by other authors [Perlow and Diokno, 1981;Tammela et al, 1992].…”

“…Signi¢cant correlations between detrusor hyperre£exia and pyramidal sign [Hattori et al, 1990a;Ohashi, 1994;Sakakibara et al, 1995], voiding dysfunction and super¢cial sensation [Sharr and Gar¢eld, 1976;Gunasekera et al, 1984], DSD and deep sensation [Hattori et al, 1990a;Sakakibara et al, 1996a], or pyramidal sign [Hattori et al, 1990a;Tammela et al, 1992;Sakakibara et al, 1995] have been previously documented. However, no signi¢cant relationship was seen between LUTS and neurologic signs in the present study of tumor patients.…”

“…Cerca del 50 % de los pacientes que solicitan ayuda por dolor incontrolable en las extremidades inferiores debido a estenosis raquídea refiere síntomas de DNTUI, como una sensación de vaciamiento incompleto de la vejiga, dificultad para iniciar la micción, incontinencia, nicturia e infecciones urinarias (IU) 94 . Estos síntomas pueden pasarse por alto o atribuirse a trastornos urológicos primarios, con un 61 %-62 % de afectados por DNTUI 94 .…”

“…Meanwhile, the number of operations increased 3‐fold for CM and 10‐fold for LCS in 25 years between 1988 and 2012 due to the aging of the population 6 . With these increasingly prevalent degenerative spinal diseases, lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are common, at 47% to 81% in CM 7‐12 and 41% to 88% in LCS patients, 13‐16 and both diseases reportedly present with storage and voiding symptoms. Major orthopedic symptoms of CM are neck pain, numbness and loss of dexterity of the upper limb, stiffness and sensory loss in the lower limbs, and gait impairment 17 .…”
