Vitellogenin Induction by Xenobiotic Estrogens in the Red-Eared Turtle and African Clawed Frog

Abstract: Many environmental pollutants have estrogenic activity in animals. Xenobiotic estrogens include many pesticides and industrial chemicals that bioaccumulate. The impact of these common pollutants on the reproductive success of wildlife may be considerable, particularly in threatened or endangered species. This research examined the use of plasma vitellogenin in males as a biomarker for estrogenic xenobiotics in reptiles and amphibians. Adult male turtles (Trachemys scripta) and frogs (Xenopus laevis) were given… Show more

“…In designing a bioassay for xenoestrogens, toxicologists and biologists have used the induction of Vtg and Zr -protein in male and juvenile oviparous vertebrates as an effective and sensitive biomarker for xenoestrogens [113-118]. Using juvenile Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) and different doses of NP, we saw that NP treatment significantly elevated plasma levels of Zr-protein and Vtg in a two week in vivo study, with the former showing more sensitivity to the xenoestrogen compound [115].…”

“…Examples include o,p-DDT, which induced estrogen-mediated hepatic synthesis of the yolk precursor VTG in male red-eared turtles (Trachemys scripta) [139] and environmentally relevant concentrations of atrazine, which induced hermaphroditism at 0.1 parts per billion (ppb) in American leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) [140]. “…It is normally synthesized in the liver of adult nonmammalian female vertebrates in response to estrogenic stimulation. The livers of both reproductively immature females and males are able to synthesize and secrete VTG in response to estrogen stimulation [209][210][211]. Thus, VTG has been used as a biomarker for xenobiotic exposure to estrogenic compounds in fishes, turtles and amphibians for which in vivo and in vitro assays have been developed [212][213][214][215][216].…”
