Vitamin E (α‐, β + γ‐ and δ‐tocopherol) levels in plant oils

Abstract: Vitamin E is the most potent lipid‐soluble antioxidant in human plasma. The richest sources of vitamin E are plant oils. This study aims to determine the concentrations of alpha, beta + gamma and delta‐tocopherols (α‐T, β + γ‐T and δ‐T) in various plant or seed oils commonly used in food, pharmaceutics or cosmetics. Forty‐one different plant or seed oil samples were purchased and kept at +4°C in the dark until the chromatographic analysis. Analyses were performed using high‐performance liquid chromatography (H… Show more

“…The vials were stored in the dark at 40 °C for a week and analyzed after 0.25 (6 h), 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days of storage. The ratio and temperature were selected on the basis of our preliminary studies and the literature [ 10 , 29 ]. The obtained results were compared with those of fresh bulk oils.…”

“…Plant oils are the richest sources of vitamin E. A comparison between seed oils highlighted that DPSO ranks fourth in terms of tocopherol content, after pomegranate (3483.4 mg/kg), wheat germ (3117.5 mg/kg), and fig (1400.2 mg/kg) seed oils [58]. Although date seeds are abundant, their uses have not been maximized for animal feed.…”

“…292 Plant oils are an excellent source of vitamin E, with pomegranate seed, wheat germ and fig seeds showing some of the highest levels in plants. 293 The climate in which plants containing vitamin E have also been investigated and therefore the process of growing plants for vitamin E harvesting can be optimised based on the conditions. Some plant species have evolved natural over-expression of key enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of vitamin E and therefore classical breeding has also been used to create species with the ability to produce larger amounts of vitamin E. 294…”
