Vitamin E Inhibits Proliferation of Primary Cultured Human Mesangial and Endothelial Cells

Abstract: Background: Vitamin E (VE) has been used as an antioxidant and has been suggested to inhibit the proliferation of mesangial cells in rat and vascular endothelial cells. The direct effect of VE on primary cultures of mesangial cells (MC) and endothelial cells (EC) from the human glomerulus was studied. Methods: (1) MC (in 17 or 2.5% FCS DMEM) or EC (in 10 or 5% FCS CSC) at 5,000 cells/well was incubated with serial concentrations of VE from 0.05 to 50 µg/ml (0.06 to 60 IU/l). (2) MC was cocultured with 160, 80,… Show more

“…It breaks the propagation of RS chain reaction in the lipids of biological membranes [25]. Vitamin E supplementation inhibits lipoprotein oxidation [68], intraglomerular macrophage infiltration [68] as well as proliferation of mesangial and endothelial cells [74]. Downregulation of renal TGF-ß1 expression was also demonstrated in some reports [75,76], but not in all [77].…”

“…Therefore, we subsequently tried to evaluate the anticancer effect of DTE on cancerous U937 cells. The objective of cell viability assay was to assess the direct growth inhibitory effect of the DTE on the proliferation and survival of the U937 cells [28]. Our results depicted inhibitory effects of DTE on the U937 cells at different time point.…”

“…Intestinal epithelial cell proliferation has recently been showed to have a positive connection with VH and CD in weaning piglets (Wang et al, 2018). Previous research suggests that VE dosages, within a certain range, inhibit different (Zhang et al, 2001;Tappeiner et al, 2010). No researches illustrate a relationship between VE and jejunal epithelial cell production.…”

“…α-Tocopherol deficiencies affect intestinal transport and the passive absorption of phenolsulfonphthalein and barbital (Meshali et al, 1976). These longknown effects of VE on intestinal functions and more recent studies tending to demonstrate that VE inhibits the in vitro proliferation of various cells (Zhang et al, 2001;Kempnã et al, 2004;Olguín-Martínez et al, 2013) suggested a study of whether, how, and to what extent VE might influence intestinal epithelial cells proliferation in constituting intestinal mucosa, and majorly function as nutrient-absorption (Barker, 2014).…”
