Wound healing is a biological complex process that involves several cell types under the control and regulation of several growth factors and cytokines. There have been efforts to study the therapeutic effects of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, platelet-derived growth factor, transforming growth factor-β, vascular endothelial growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor on chronic wounds. In addition, the effects of biomaterials such as nano-fibrous chitin and chitosan have been proven to be effective on wound healing. Furthermore, stem cell therapy using adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) has been developed as a new therapeutic method for wound repair and healing. In this review, we will summarize the role of stem cells; growth factors and biomaterials in wound healing and repair.

BACKGROUND: Fibrocystic changes (FCCs) of the breast are a common breast condition. Mastalgia is the most common symptom of FCC; it usually causes fear of breast cancer and has negative effects on the quality of life. AIM: The objective of the research was to establish the effect of cosupplementation of omega-3 plus Vitamin E on mastalgia in FCC patients, to evaluate its effect with that of Vitamin E only, and to determine the effect of omega-3 plus Vitamin E versus Vitamin E only on the radiological findings in FCC patients. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial was conducted on 120 FCC patients with mastalgia. The participants were randomly assigned into three groups: Omega-3 plus Vitamin E group, Vitamin E only group, and control group. The new breast pain chart was used to assess the severity of mastalgia in the three groups before, through, and after intervention. Radiological assessment was done before and after the intervention. RESULTS: After 3 months of the intervention, there was a statistically significant difference between the three groups regarding radiological results with p > 0.05 and, after the 3rd month of interventions, there was a statistically significant difference between the groups regarding the new pain score with p > 0.001. The median of the new pain score premenstrual was 4.8, 2, and 2.5 in control, omega-3 plus Vitamin E, and Vitamin E only, respectively, but this difference was insignificant between the last two groups (p < 0.996). CONCLUSION: This study showed that Vitamin E and Vitamin E plus omega-3 were effective in relieving mastalgia in FCC patients. However, the addition of omega-3 was ineffective.

BACKGROUND:Breast periodic pain is the most common disorder of the breast which leads to consultation with knowledgeable people like a midwife. The aim of this study was to compare the therapeutic effect of flaxseed, evening primrose oil, and Vitamin E on the duration of the period of breast pain.MATERIALS AND METHODS:This study is a quasi-randomized clinical trial conducted in 2015 on ninety patients complaining of breast periodic pain referring to Gynecologic Clinics of Ghaem Hospital or residents living in dormitories of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Randomization was conducted based on the study environment. The first group received 30 g of powdered flaxseed, the second group received two 1000 mg capsules of evening primrose, and the third group received 1 capsule of 400 IU Vitamin E, daily and for two menstrual cycles. Cyclical breast pain was measured at the beginning and end of both intervention periods by daily subscription form of pain duration. Data analysis was performed by SPSS 16 software and Kolmogorov–Smirnov, Chi-square, Friedman, Fisher's, and one-sided ANOVA tests. The level of significance was set at P < 0.05.RESULTS:The mean duration of breast pain in flaxseed group within 2 months of intervention decreased significantly (confidence interval [CI] =95%, P = 0.006), but despite reducing the duration of pain in evening primrose oil group (CI = 95%, P = 0.058) and Vitamin E (CI = 95%, P = 0.306), this reduction was not significant. In overall, the average duration of breast pain in all three flaxseed, evening primrose oil, and Vitamin E groups was not significantly different before the intervention (CI = 95%, P = 0.286), 1 month after the intervention (CI = 95%, P = 0.195), and 2 months after the intervention (CI = 95%, P = 0.667).CONCLUSION:The use of flaxseed, evening primrose oil, or Vitamin E may reduce breast pain, and this is a significant reduction in flaxseed.
