Vitamin E Ameliorates the Toxic Effect of Amiodarone on Thyroid Gland in Rats: A Histological and Ultrastructural Study

Abstract: Background: Amiodarone is a highly effective and class III antiarrhythmic drug. It can be used to treat wide range of arrhythmias. However, it is markedly concentrated in tissues leading to multiple adverse effects mainly on thyroid gland. The concomitant use of vitamin E with amiodarone in treatment of arrhythmias can ameliorate the hazardous effects of amiodarone on thyroid gland Aim of work: The aim of this work is to study the histological and ultrastructural effects of amiodarone as antiarrhythmic drug on… Show more

“…Vitamin E has different potent antioxidants forms, they donate hydrogen from their phenolic group to scavenge lipid peroxyl radicals [24]. α-tocopherol strength point as a highly efficient antioxidant is that it executes its action extremely fast, before the peroxyl radicals can do any harm or other reactions [25,26]. In this study, we investigate the protective effect of galantamine hydrobromide through its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-apoptotic effects and vitamin E as adjuvant.…”
