Vitamin D Status during Pregnancy in a Multi-Ethnic Population-Representative Swedish Cohort

Abstract: There is currently little information on changes in vitamin D status during pregnancy and its predictors. The aim was to study the determinants of change in vitamin D status during pregnancy and of vitamin D deficiency (<30 nmol/L) in early pregnancy. Blood was drawn in the first (T1) and third trimester (T3). Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) (N = 1985) was analysed by liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry. Season-corrected 25(OH)D was calculated by fitting cosine functions to the data. Mean (stand… Show more

“…The positive association between vitamin D intake from food and supplements and maternal VDD is in agreement with some [34,41,[43][44][45][46][47][48], but not all [39] of the previous studies. It appears that vitamin D intake from food and supplements contributed signi cantly to 25OHD level in population, in which sun exposure is minimum or dermal synthesis of 25OHD is limited.…”

“…Pregnant women from the population-based GraviD cohort in the south-west of Sweden were included in this study. The cohort has been described in detail elsewhere [19]. In brief, 2125 women were included in the cohort when registering for antenatal care during autumn 2013 and spring 2014.…”

“…In children, severe VDD additionally causes hypocalcaemia (low levels of calcium in the blood), which is associated with seizures, tetany and heart failure (4,5), and rickets with osteomalacic leg bowing, muscle weakness and delayed infant development. Morbidity from VDD is predominantly found in individuals from Black and Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups living in high-latitude countries, including in the UK (6,7), the US (8), Canada (9), Scandinavian countries (10)(11)(12)(13) and Australia (8,14). Nonetheless, VDD is common in many populations across the world, regardless of ethnicity.…”

“…Evidence shows that vitamin D status, which is measured through the blood concentration of a Vitamin D metabolite, the 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], is suboptimal in 13% of the European population (21). In the UK population, 20% of adults and 16% of children aged between 11 and 18 years are estimated to be VDD (2), with the BAME group being, by far, the most affected (10,12,(22)(23)(24)(25).…”
