Vitamin D Serum Levels in Patients with Statin-Induced Musculoskeletal Pain

Abstract: Introduction. Statin-associated muscle symptoms are common side effects of statin therapy. These symptoms include myopathy, myalgia, and rhabdomyolysis. Vitamin D has been associated with musculoskeletal health; thus, its deficiency may produce detrimental effects in this tissue. Indeed, one symptom of vitamin D deficiency is myalgia, and the normalization of low vitamin D levels can relieve it. Patients and Methods. This cross-sectional study examined 1210 statin-treated patients to assess vitamin D status. T… Show more

“…Fatigue is a common clinical condition characterized by decreased energy, concentration, and motivation that interferes with the activities of daily living. As such, fatigue is also associated with several physical and psychological symptoms, including pain, depression, distress, dyspnea, anxiety, and poor sleep quality [30]. Patients with an induced fatigue state show a reduced exercise tolerance and a post-exercise fatigue even after minimal physical activity, thus, suggesting that an impaired muscle function may occur behind this condition.…”

“…Vitamin D is a neuroactive steroid that may mediate pain processes by modulating several signal transduction systems. Patients with statin-induced musculoskeletal pain often have low vitamin D levels [56]. Statins decrease cholesterol synthesis through the reversible block of the hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase.…”

“…Oral microbiota changes are able to modulate the connection between oral bacteria and humans causing diseases (21,22). Oral microbiota seems to influence OSCC through the carcinogenetic modulation of cell metabolism (such as modifying the concentration of nutrients and vitamins), thereby promoting the production of different cytokines known to be involved in several pathological conditions (23)(24)(25)(26)(27).…”
