Vitamin D metabolism, sex hormones, and male reproductive function

Abstract: The spectrum of vitamin D (VD)-mediated effects has expanded in recent years, and VD is now recognized as a versatile signaling molecule rather than being solely a regulator of bone health and calcium homeostasis. One of the recently identified target areas of VD is male reproductive function. The VD receptor (VDR) and the VD metabolizing enzyme expression studies documented the presence of this system in the testes, mature spermatozoa, and ejaculatory tract, suggesting that both systemic and local VD metaboli… Show more

“…Test for interaction was conducted for quintiles of sex hormones and race/ethnicity, and with vitamin D levels. In addition, we performed stratified analyses based on race/ethnicity since it may be associated with Pi regulation (Gutierrez et al , 2011), and serum levels of vitamin D using its median value in the study population (</≥24.2 ng/mL) since vitamin D is a regulator of Pi metabolism and has been shown to be associated with the development of cancer (Blomberg Jensen, 2012). …”

“…The effect of testosterone (T) on male reproduction has been intensively studied, and considerable evidence supports the influence of vitamin D on semen quality (22). However, few studies have focused on the effects of testosterone in women, and the relationship between T and vitamin D levels has been investigated in a little quantities.…”
