Vitamin D levels in an Australian population

Abstract: BackgroundLevels of vitamin D in the population have come under increasing scrutiny, however there are only a few studies in Australia which measure levels in the general population. The aim of this study was to measure the levels of vitamin D within a large population cohort and examine the association with seasons and selected demographic and health risk factors.MethodsA longitudinal cohort study of 2413 participants in the northwest suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia conducted between 2008 and 2010 was us… Show more

“…Men with low education consumed less vitamin D than did men with high education, as previously reported in Switzerland [13, 15] but not elsewhere [19, 20, 25, 26]. This may be due to higher fish consumption among highly educated men [13, 27], but some associations might be country-specific—Switzerland has no foods fortified with vitamin D. Unlike in our previous paper [15], we found no educational differences in MUFA and carotene, which may be because the previous paper did not mutually adjust for income and occupation, and because education was used as a dichotomous variable.…”

“…On the other hand, owing to the importance of geographical location and weather conditions in the cutaneous synthesis of vitamin D, 3, 12, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 it should be emphasized that Navarre is a Spanish region located in the north of the Iberian peninsula and characterized by a high frequency of precipitations and/or cloudiness and high latitude (42° north latitude), and these features could condition the levels of serum calcidiol.…”

“…Notably, our control population had the lowest mean 25-VD3. However, this group did not consist of healthy control patients and many had significant risk factors for hypovitaminosis D including: African American ethnicity (50%), obesity (50%), current tobacco abuse, and chronic diseases such as diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [12,16,17]. …”
