Vitamin D and stress urinary incontinence in pregnancy: a cross‐sectional study

Abstract: Objective To assess the association between levels of vitamin D and urinary incontinence (UI) in pregnancy. Design A cross‐sectional study. Secondary analysis of a randomised controlled trial. Setting Two university hospitals in Norway. Population A total of 851 healthy, pregnant women >18 years in gestational weeks 18–22 with a singleton live fetus. “…Re: Vitamin D and stress urinary incontinence in pregnancy: a crosssectional study Dear Editor, We read with interest the recent crosssectional study from Stafne et al in which they describe an association between urinary incontinence symptoms in pregnancy and low vitamin D levels. 1 Urinary incontinence is a common problem in pregnancy, with limited treatment options.…”

“…A recent analysis by Stafne et al showed that women with a reduced vitamin D level suffer significantly more often from urinary incontinence during pregnancy 55 , 56 . The extent to which basic vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy has protective effects for the pelvic floor is still unclear.…”

“…A strong association was found between 25(OH)D <50 nmol/l and stress UI 2 . The aetiology of stress UI is different from that of urgency UI, and is mainly attributed to muscle weakness caused by stretched or injured muscles, nerves and connective tissue.…”

“…However, urgency UI, which is the most frequent UI symptom associated with UTIs, was reported by 95 (11%) women in our study population. The proportion of women reporting urgency UI was equally distributed in the different categories of vitamin D levels – 25(OH)D <50 nmol/l, 50–74 nmol/l and ≥75 nmol/l 2 …”
