Vitamin C and Disease: Insights from the Evolutionary Perspective

Abstract: The role of vitamin C at the physiological and cellular levels is indisputable. In line with this, blood level of vitamin C is inversely related to disease parameters such as risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and mortality in prospective cohort and correlational studies. At the same time, adequately powered clinical intervention studies consistently provide no evidence for a beneficial effect of supplementing vitamin C. Here we provide a framework to resolve this apparent conflict. Besides providing an ov… Show more

“…We believe that the paleolithic ketogenic diet by excluding "non-paleolithic" food components normalizes the pathological permeability of the intestines as also seen in a published case of Crohn's disease [22], and likely through the normalization of intestinal permeability results in lowering inflammatory factors (as also showed in our previous case reports). In addition, ketosis, based on animal meat and fat may ensure optimal supply and bioavailability of vitamins, including vitamin C [33] the high blood level of which is important for the proper functioning of the immune system and also convey antitumor effects [34].…”

“…The reason for this is unknown, but it may be due to vitamin C's interaction with glucose. Glucose appears to compete with the oxidised form of vitamin C for entry into cells and mitochondria (116)(117)(118)(119) . Once inside the cell, glutathione, which is increased during a LCKD, appears to recover the function of vitamin C (120)(121)(122) .…”

“…The higher blood level of Vitamin C is associated with lower mortality and morbidity in several chronic conditions [23]. Metabolism of vitamin C, including absorption and its uptake by several cell types, is inhibited by increasing glucose concentration.…”
