Vitamin B12catalysed reactions

Abstract: Vitamin B12 (cobalamin, 1) is one of a few naturally occurring organometallic molecules. As a cofactor for adenosylcobalamin-dependent and methylcobalamin-dependent enzymes, it plays a crucial role in biological processes, including DNA synthesis and regulation, nervous system function, red blood cell formation, etc. Enzymatic reactions, such as isomerisation, dehalogenation, and methyl transfer, rely on the formation and cleavage of the Co-C bond. Because it is a natural, nontoxic, environmentally benign coba… Show more

“…Following these discoveries in the 1960’s were a number of reports in the 1980’s and 1990’s that employed related cobalt complexes in C-C bond coupling between alkyl halides and alkenes, 279,280,281,282,283,284,285 and to effect radical polymerization 286 of acrylates. 287 …”

“…Its lifesaving effect was first noticed during treatments of deadly pernicious anaemia with (B 12 -containing) raw liver extracts in the beginning of the 20 th century. [1][2][3][4][5][6] Taking Before discussing the topics in more detail, a short overview on the structure, properties and biological behaviour of cobalamins (Cbls) is given in chapters 1.1 and 1.2. Today, the chemistry, biochemistry and enzymology of cobalamins (Cbls) are well explored.…”

“…This class of compounds displays a variety of natural light-responsive functions and a rich photoreactivity following both radical and non-radical pathways [74][75][76][77][78]. Based on the photosensitization of redoxactive B12 derivatives, Hisaeda and coworkers have recently developed various bio-inspired reactions for the degradation of organohalide pollutants such as DDT and related compounds according to eq.…”
