Visual Workload of the Copilot/Navigator during Terrain Flight

Abstract: The emphasis on aviator workload has been of primary concern to the U.S. Army aviation community since the incorporation of low altitude terrain flight techniques into the helicopter tactics repertory. Since navigation is a particularly acute problem at low altitudes, this project examined the visual workload of the navigator/copilot during terrain flight (nap-of-the-earth, contour, and low level) in a UH-1H helicopter. Visual performance was measured via a modified NAC Eye Mark Recorder used in conjunction wi… Show more

“…Additionally, most applications of eye tracking concentrate in improving the standard layout and design of Web pages that can influence user's visual processing (Russell, 2005). Besides, eye tracking and usability evaluation studies try to investigate and understand user behaviour (Freedman, 1984;Jacob, 1991Jacob, , 1995Lohse & Johnson, 1996;Rayner, 1998;Russo & Leclerc, 1994;Sanders, Simmons, & Hofman, 1979) with an increasing interest to Web page performance (Granka, Joachims, & Gay, 2004;Jay, Stevens, Glencross, & Chalmers, 2006;McCarthy, Sasse, & Riegelsberger, 2004;Outing & Ruel, 2006). The idea that user' features such as cognitive abilities and personality are affecting the effectiveness of information visualization techniques is continuously growing.…”
