Visual outcomes and subjective experience with three intraocular lenses based presbyopia correcting strategies in cataract patients

Abstract: To compare the visual outcomes and subjective experience of three intraocular lenses (IOL) implant strategies. Retrospective comparative study. This study comprised patients who underwent phacoemulsification and bilateral implantation of extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL (ZXR00; EDOF group), blended implantation of EDOF and bifocal IOL (ZXR00/ZLB00; blended group), and bilateral implantation of trifocal IOL (AT LISA tri 839MP; trifocal group). The outcomes included visual acuity (VA), visual defocus curve, co… Show more

“…In another comparative study published in the same year, Zhu et al found 0.09, 0.15, and 0.13 logMAR in their AT LISA tri patients at −1D, −2D, and −3D, respectively. 20 Those values are nearly identical to the ones reported by Torky et al, 19 showing a good agreement between the VA of the two cohorts. Our simulated polychromatic VA assessment for the AT ELANA yielded logMAR values of 0.09, 0.10, and 0.11 at defocus levels of −1D, −2D, and −3D, respectively.…”

“…Clinical application of EDoF IOLs may also increase because it can provide continuous vision over a range of distances, is closer to human eye perception, and has fewer visual disturbances. A retrospective comparative study by Zhu et al found that EDoF IOLs had the best quality of vision and the least photic disturbance compared to non-EDoF MfIOL; however, near VA was worse than that of conventional types 71 . Similarly, Karuppiah et al found that the EDoF group had better contrast sensitivity than the trifocal non-EDoF IOL group.…”

“…For instance, Tañá-Sanz et al [ 14 ] reported a mean pupil size of 2.4 mm in a sample of patients with a mean age of 72 years, and Sun et al [ 15 ] reported a mean pupil size of 3.3 mm in a sample of patients with a mean age of 66 years. Other authors have also used Pentacam for reporting PP in their studies with mean pupil sizes in the range of 2.4 to 3.3 mm depending on the mean age of the sample [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. As PW now measures MP, it is expected that future studies will also include the MP with this device; therefore, it is important to know how the measurement agrees with other previous devices such as the K5M.…”
