Visual Outcome in Scleral Fixated Intraocular Lenses

Abstract: BACKGROUNDCollagen is the most abundantly present connective tissue. In higher animals, primarily as extracellular insoluble fibres and the fibres account for large part of organic mass of skin, tendon, blood vessel, bone teeth, cornea and vitreous humour. Collagen also provides the framework of parenchymal organs and basement membrane. The collagens constitute a family of proteins selected during evolution for the execution of several (mainly structural) functions. During the process of evolution of multicell… Show more

“…Some surgeons advocate that in experienced hands, fixating an IOL to the sclera offers a visual prognosis which is good enough to favor this procedure as the standard of care for correcting aphakia in patients with insufficient capsular support [12]. With its limitations and lack of long-term follow-up, our study supports this idea.…”

“…One major advantage of scleral-fixated IOL, especially for a vitreoretinal surgeon, is that any future vitreoretinal surgery procedure can be performed with no risk of IOL dislocation, as may happen in anterior placed IOLs [12]. Moreover, these complicated cases in which secondary IOLs are indicated are at risk to develop posterior segment complications that require proper examination and even surgical treatment.…”

“…Similar complications were also observed in other studies regarding the visual outcome after SFIOL. 6,7,8 The study by Ali et al showed postoperative complications such as ocular hypotony (9.4%), ocular hypertension (7%), and vitreous hemorrhage (7%), which were absent in the findings of our study. Overall the surgical and visual outcome was good in this study.…”
