ObjectivesHome haemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) have seen growth in utilisation around the globe over the last few years. However, home dialysis, with its attendant technical complexity and risk of adverse events continues to pose challenges for wider adoption. We examined whether differences in patients’ learning styles are associated with differing risk of adverse events in both home HD and PD patients.DesignRetrospective cohort study.SettingTertiary care hospital in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.ParticipantsOne hundred and eighteen prevalent adult (≥18 years) home dialysis patients (40 PD and 78 home HD) were enrolled. Patients on home dialysis for less than 6 months or receiving home nursing assistance for dialysis were excluded from the study.InterventionsEnrolled patients completed (VARK) Visual, Aural, Reading-writing and Kinesthetic questionnaires to determine learning styles.Primary and secondary outcome measuresHome HD and PD adverse events were identified within 6 months of completing home dialysis training. Event rates were then stratified and compared according to learning styles.ResultsThirty patients had a total of 53 adverse events. We used logistic regression analysis to determine unadjusted and adjusted ORs for a single adverse event. Non-visual learners were 4.35 times more likely to have an adverse event (p=0.001). After adjusting for age, gender, dialysis modality, training duration, dialysis vintage, prior renal replacement therapy, visual impairment, education and literacy, an adverse event was still four times more likely among non-visual learners compared to visual learners (p=0.008). A subgroup analysis of home HD patients showed adverse events were more likely among non-visual learners (OR 11.1; p=0.003), whereas PD patients showed a trend for more adverse events in non-visual learners (OR: 1.60; p=0.694).ConclusionsDifferent learning styles in home dialysis patients exist. Visual learning styles are associated with fewer adverse events in home dialysis patients within the first 6 months of completing training. Individualisation of home dialysis training by learning style is warranted.

Background: Visual word recognition is one of the central topics in cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience. Genetic factors are known to contribute to the visual word recognition, but no genes associated with this process have been identified so far. We studied the impact of the DRD2 C957T polymorphism on the efficiency of visual word recognition by measuring its neuronal correlates and behavioral parameters. Early (~200 ms) components of event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded during a lexical decision task. The DRD2 C957T polymorphism is thought to be associated with D2 receptor’s availability and binding potential. Earlier studies have demonstrated the influence of this variation on perception and processing of verbal stimuli. The DRD2 C957T is also associated with schizophrenia, with the C allele being the risk allele. Methods: Electroencephalogram, genetic, and behavioral data were collected from 96 healthy individuals (53.1% men). ERPs were recorded for words and pseudowords in implicit and explicit tasks. Two regions of interests in the left ventral temporal cortex, whose role in early visual word processing is well established, were selected for analysis. Results: The results showed the main effect of the DRD2 C957T polymorphism on P200 amplitude. Carriers of the TT genotype had higher P200 amplitudes compared to subjects with schizophrenia risk C allele. Within-group comparisons demonstrated a better ability to adjust attention to orthographic stimuli depending on task demands and lexicality in the TT group. Conclusion: The results of the study suggest that the DRD2 C957T polymorphism modulates early stages of visual word recognition.

Handedness and learning styles: a study of its inter relationship

Background: The alleged link between handedness and learning is debatable. Studies unveil that handedness has a way of influencing learning and affects the academic performance of students. Despite the researchers pointing out that handedness influences the brain organization and function, teaching strategies have largely ignored this fact. The concept of using various sensory modalities as a part of learning has not been comprehended well. The aim of the study is to find out the prevalence of handedness among our medical students and to look onto the types of learning styles amongst them and to determine the correlation between handedness with learning styles.Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among hundred medical students using handgrip dynamometer for handedness and VARK questionnaire (Visual, auditory, read/write, kinesthetic; a validated tool that helps one to identify the most preferred sensory modality for learning) for determining the learning preference. Data was analysed using univariate and bivariate analysis through cross tabulation and Pearson chi square test using SPSS version 20.Results: Right handers preferred VARK with dominancy for auditory learning styles, left handers preferred VARK with dominancy for auditory and kinesthetic learning styles while ambidextrous prefer visual learning styles.Conclusions: The awareness of the association of handedness with various learning styles and its implications on academic performance should be at the forefront of teaching strategies adopted by teachers. Hence, we conclude that to be an effective learner, the learning needs have to be understood and cater to by the trainers.
