Are adverse events in newly trained home dialysis patients related to learning styles? A single-centre retrospective study from Toronto, Canada

Abstract: ObjectivesHome haemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) have seen growth in utilisation around the globe over the last few years. However, home dialysis, with its attendant technical complexity and risk of adverse events continues to pose challenges for wider adoption. We examined whether differences in patients’ learning styles are associated with differing risk of adverse events in both home HD and PD patients.DesignRetrospective cohort study.SettingTertiary care hospital in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.P… Show more

“…For that to happen, TCU staff need to account for the different learning styles: visual, aural, reading-writing, and kinesthetic. 24 Different formats for educational materials, including the text, diagrams, audio, and videos, should be readily available. The variability also gives the coaches a repository of different flavors they can reach to, to vary their approach as necessary.…”

“…In two separate studies, HHD patients that were nonvisual learners had an increased likelihood of an adverse event [OR 11.1; p = 0.003 and 6.49; p = 0.02]. 57,58 Over time, patients seem to develop unpredictable perhaps time-saving modifications to the unit's standard operating procedures (SOPs). They may have forgotten or become complacent about the potential dire consequences of protocol deviation as evidenced by the lack of use of wetnesssensor devices in one study.…”
