Visitors’ preferences of renewable energy options in “green” hotels

Abstract: Tourism belongs to the industries with significant energy consumption. Visitors as well as hotel managers have, however, a positive attitude towards the responsible use of energy resources. The level of research on visitors' preferences of using different types of renewable energy is low, unlike findings on factual characteristics of conventional and renewable energies. That is why our aim was to assess visitors' preferences of environmentally friendly energy sources in hotels. Preferences of six types of rene… Show more

“…Furthermore, a growing body of literature has examined consumer willingness to pay in order to achieve zero energy consumption through the domestic use of microgeneration renewables [51,52]. Other scholars have examined the preference for, and use of, different available renewables options, even in different social groups [20,53]. Previous studies claim that investment in microgeneration, besides the potential of being an economically-sound manner to reduce energy costs and CO 2 emissions, can also initiate positive changes in energy consumption patterns by means of lower levels of consumption and load shifting [54].…”

“…With their constant operation and ongoing need for heating/cooling and hot water, the challenge to provide high quality indoor environment and the guests' expectations for different services, hotels tend to be very energy intensive [12,13]. This high level of energy consumption results in high CO 2 emission rates for hotel buildings [14,15].…”
