Visioning synthetic futures for yeast research within the context of current global techno‐political trends

Thomas A. Dixon,
Roy S. K. Walker,
Isak S. Pretorius

Abstract: Yeast research is entering into a new period of scholarship, with new scientific tools, new questions to ask and new issues to consider. The politics of emerging and critical technology can no longer be separated from the pursuit of basic science in fields, such as synthetic biology and engineering biology. Given the intensifying race for technological leadership, yeast research is likely to attract significant investment from government, and that it offers huge opportunities to the curious minded from a basic… Show more

“…The authors envision that synthetic yeast futures will encompass both basic and applied science questions of intense interest to government and non-government funding sources. This vision highlights the potential of synthetic biology to address global challenges and turn them into research opportunities (Dixon, Walker, & Pretorius, 2023). Sun and Zhong (2019) discuss biomacromolecules in emerging biological and medical science and technology.…”

“…The study of these synthetic communities generates invaluable information on the contribution of the community to the overall ecosystem function. However, there are still several limitations, including how to manage the knowledge acquired in synthetic communities when dealing with naturally established communities, intercellular communication between single and multiple species, and how cell consortia can be optimised or controlled in the long term [250,251]. Once the functionalities provided by specific taxa are identified, it is necessary to investigate how the population dynamics of these taxa and of different microbial strains respond to different agricultural practices.…”
