“…Fuchs et al (Fuchs et al, 2005) reported significant pain relief and improved quality of life, also in the long term, in patients affected from facet joints osteoarthritis with chronic non radicular pain in the lumbar spine. However, these results are not in agreement with a recent study by Cleary et al (Cleary et al, 2008), who have not seen any benefit of viscosupplementation in the management of symptomatic lumbar facet osteoarthritis.…”

“…[71] The two prospective studies show an opposite outcome. Cleary et al, [72] in their prospective case series of 13 patients, showed no improvement on the VAS for pain, while DePalma et al [73] showed a significant improvement in a series of 15 patients using the same VAS for pain.…”

“…By not completing precision, diagnostic lumbar FJ blocks, these investigators likely enrolled numerous patients who were not experiencing lumbar FJ pain. In a more recent study, Cleary et al evaluated the utility of intra-articular high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, concluding no benefit of VS in the management of symptomatic lumbar FJA [14]. However, Cleary et al performed only one HA injection, whereas 3-6 weekly injections have been most widely studied [33], and did not use diagnostic blocks to confirm FJ symptoms.…”
