Hyaluronic Acid for the Treatment of Osteoarthritis in all Joints Except the Knee

Abstract: Our recommendation for future research is that one should focus on adequately powered randomized trials comparing HA treatment with other types of intra-articular or conservative treatment. We think it is useless to further perform and publish (large) non-comparative prospective studies about the use of HA in the treatment of problems caused by OA. It is well perceived that HA exerts positive effects in the treatment of OA, but up to now there is no (strong) evidence available that HA is superior to other trea… Show more

“…However, a similar concept cannot be applied when hyaluronic acid is used, as these substances explicate their action only when injected directly in the joint space [30]. Thanks to its high tolerability and low side effects, the use of hyaluronic acid has increased in the local treatment of FJOA and could be suggested in patients with contraindication to corticosteroids [31,32].…”

“…Since the SIJ is a synovial joint, and controlled studies for knee, hip and other forms of osteoarthritis have demonstrated intermediate-term benefit with hyaluronic acid [86,87], some have postulated that viscosupplementation might be effective in a subgroup of patients with degenerative SIJ arthritis. Srejic et al reported 12-16 months of significant pain relief in four patients with SIJ pain who underwent a series of three IA injections with hyaluronic acid [88].…”

“…Проведе-ние этих манипуляций показано в сочетании с упражне-ниями на растягивание мышц, массажем [74]. В настоя-щее время отсутствуют методы консервативной терапии, предотвращающие возникновение или прогрессирование дегенеративных изменений в позвоночнике, эффектив-ность так называемых хондропротекторов, в том числе внутрисуставного введения гиалуроновой кислоты, не доказана [75].…”
