Viscosities of the crust and upper mantle constrained by three-dimensional GPS rates in the Sichuan–Yunnan fragment of China

Abstract: The plastic flow in the Sichuan-Yunnan fragment (SYF) is the consequence of the eastern expansion of the Tibetan Plateau. The SYF area can be divided into three sections by the Xiaojin River fault zone and Red River fault zone, which both contain the normal fault component, consistent with GPS observations. The average vertical rates of the three sections exhibit a step-like distribution, and the southern subsidence rate is about 1-2 mm/year with respect to the northern area. To explain the vertical movement i… Show more

“…It is a frontier zone and a deep mass flow zone for the northeast-trending collisional extrusion of the Indian plate and Eurasian continent ( Fig. 1) (She and Fu 2019;Xu et al 2013). From the perspective of plate tectonics, due to the collision of the nearly SN-trending subducting Indian plate and Eurasian continent, the northern side of the Tibetan Plateau is blocked by the Siberian platform.…”

“…Therefore, the M s 4.3 Qiaojia earthquake can be considered a natural event. According to a previous study [33], the viscosity of the upper mantle is ~2.8 × 10 Pa • s, and the viscosity of the crust is less than 1.0 × 10 Pa • s in the Sichuan-Yunnan region. Reservoirs are usually designed to serve as power supplies for hundreds of years.…”

“…To reduce the errors caused by different methods of processing GPS data, the weighted average method [ 36 ] was applied to obtain the average vertical rates of the same GPS observation stations (66 in total) from the datasets of [ 33 , 34 , 35 ]. The median errors of the observed data were taken as the weight in Figure 11 .…”
