Visceral fat area is associated with HbA1c but not dialysate-related glucose load in nondiabetic PD patients

Abstract: Factors associated with increased visceral fat area (VFA) have been well documented in the general population but rarely explored in nondiabetic individuals on peritoneal dialysis (PD). As glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is positively correlated with VFA in diabetic patients, we hypothesized that the same correlation would exist in nondiabetic PD patients. We enrolled 105 nondiabetic patients who had undergone chronic PD for more than 3 months. Each subject underwent an abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan,… Show more

“…Age, BMI, HbA1c, use of RAS inhibitors, and serum creatinine level are independent determinants of visceral fat in non-diabetic PD patients. [ 15 ] In our study, the change in VFA showed a positive correlation with age and HDL-C, while it was negatively correlated with waist circumference and SFA. Also, there was no correlation between VFA and sex, BMI, HbA1c, serum creatinine, and RAS inhibitor usage.…”

“…Therefore, smokers tended to be obese compared to non-smokers [ 26 ]. Moreover, a previous study revealed that visceral adiposity was associated with HbA1c [ 27 ]. We guess that these potential biological mechanisms are underlying the strong association between dual smoking and elevated HbA1c levels compared to non-smoking among obese people compared to normal and underweight people.…”

“…Some study results regarding echocardiography or laboratory data were published3334. The inclusion criteria for patients group in this study were 1) received PD for more than 6 months; 2) no history of cardiovascular disease such as atrial fibrillation, significant valvular heart disease, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, heart failure, cerebrovascular events, or peripheral artery disease.…”
