Visceral adiposity index and prognosis among patients with ischemic heart failure

Abstract: CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES: The obesity paradox has already been established in relation to heart failure, but it is not known which obesity indicator best reflects this phenomenon. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between obesity indexes and mortality among patients with heart failure. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cohort study conducted in the Department of Cardiology of Hospital Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Brazil). METHODS: Clinical, demographic, socioeconomic, biochemical and anthropometric data on … Show more

“…The second hypothesis of this study was that sAA could also be related to some extent to body composition measures associated with cardiovascular health, such as WHR. Contrarily to what we expected, the analysis revealed a significant and positive association between sAA and two indicators of cardiovascular health in adults: body adiposity and WHR [ 36 , 37 , 38 ]. However, according to the hypothesis of amylase, this relationship should be inverse.…”

“…Although several studies confirm the usefulness of using VAI in populations of different races and ethnicities, it is necessary that previous validation occurs in population groups different from the one in which it was validated 11 , since fat distribution varies between genders, age, and race 1 . In Brazil, some studies have used VAI as a cardiometabolic risk marker 12,13 , but few evaluated its applicability compared to a reference method in the Brazilian population. In this context, the objective of this study is to evaluate the applicability of VAI in a Brazilian sample.…”

“…As a surrogate of visceral adiposity, the calculation of VAI involves both anthropometric and metabolic variables. Thus, VAI could be a reliable marker in identifying VAT dysfunction and systemic metabolic disturbances including T2DM, hyperuricemia, and cardiovascular diseases [8,9,12,32]. Similarly, LAP, as an index for intra-abdominal fat accumulation, could predict insulin resistance-related metabolic disorders [14,33,34].…”
