Virulence Pattern of Venturia inaequalis Field Isolates and Corresponding Differential Resistance in Malus x domestica

Abstract: All commercially important apple cultivars are susceptible in the field to scab caused by Venturia inaequalis. The scope of this study was to investigate variation in virulence in Venturia inaequalis populations towards commercial apple cultivars. For this purpose, primary lesions were sampled in orchards with different varietal compositions and diversities. The virulence pattern of monosporic isolates, obtained by isolation of single conidia, was assessed by cross inoculations of the cv. Ananas Reinette, Bosk… Show more

“…To these 'historical' sources of scab resistance, the scabresistance genes of 'Golden Delicious' (Vg), GMAL 2473 (Vr 2 ), 'Durello di Forli' (Vd), differential host 2 (Vh2) and host 4 (Vh4) (derived from M. pumila R12740-7A), and M. sylvestris W193B (Vh8) (Durel et al 2000, Bus et al 2004, Bus et al 2005a, 2005b can be added If only 1 resistance source is incorporated into a new variety, it is often not durable because, over time, the pathogen can overcome this resistance. This is currently happening with Vf resistance (Parisi et al 1993), and it has occurred in the past with ephemeral resistance genes (Koch et al 2000, MacHardy et al 2001. It would therefore be desirable to combine several different resistance sources in 1 variety (pyramiding).…”
