Virtual reality in vestibular rehabilitation: a pilot study

Abstract: Background/AimsWe evaluated the efficacy of using virtual reality with specific games for vestibular rehabilitation to treat patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.MethodsThe Activity-Specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC Scale), Dizziness Handicap Inventory, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory, Berg Balance Scale, Balancim, Romberg and Dix-Hallpike tests were used to evaluate 10 participants (5 males and 5 females; mean age 38.5 ± 14.7 years) with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, who played 3 specif… Show more

“…Miziara et al, on the other hand, applied vestibular rehabilitation to BPPV patients using the “ski slalom” game and “tightrope walking VR game systems”, consisting of two sessions and 30 min per week for 4 weeks. Researchers have shown that individuals’ DHI scores and postural oscillations decreased significantly after 4 weeks [ 32 ]. In our VRT protocol, the game called ‘Beat Saber’ aims to use the foot and hip ankle strategy in a balanced way for obstacles coming from the right, left, and ahead.…”

“…The existing literature on VR technology in vestibular rehabilitation includes peripheral vestibular disorders other than BPPV (i.e. labyrinthitis, neuronitis, Meniere's disease, acoustic neuroma, chronic dizziness) and central vestibular disorders using 3D head-mounted VR gaming, [8,11,12,[14][15][16][17][18][19] 2D computer-based VR gaming [18,[20][21][22] and non-exergaming VR systems. [16,23] Therefore, the primary hypothesis of this study was that 3D-VRT are effective on gait speed with and without head turns (horizontal and vertical) in patients with BPPV compared to a control group.…”
