Virtual laboratories for electrical engineering students: Student perspectives and design guidelines

Abstract: This research is focused on understanding the role of virtual laboratories and physical laboratories, specifically in the context of the electrical engineering discipline. It is important to emphasize that the research is not aimed at replacing physical laboratories as they form an essential part of the education of electrical engineers, but rather to supplement them using virtual laboratories. In the literature, there are different perspectives on the implementations of virtual laboratories. Virtual laboratori… Show more

“…The SVL used in this study [25] was developed with a webbased application and deployed to students as an optional learning tool to supplement the work of PL by emulating the experiences of real laboratory, facilitate performing the simulated experiments, and also to provide solutions for complex and complicated experiments without the need of using real equipments. The given study provided a good starting point for a joint participation and collaboration between practitioners and students, which assisted researchers to identify the design features of VLs based on the laboratory learning objectives of ABET, students' potential preferences, and their feedback during the development of such laboratory [26].…”

“…This is a consequence of the user's internal content space (motivation, mood, expectations), characteristics of how the system should be used (usability, functionality), and the context in which the interaction takes place (organizational or social environment, voluntary use) [8]. To minimize the risk of missed learning outcomes through a misconception of the virtual simulator space, it is paramount to gauge UX before implementing simulators in a classroom environment [9].…”
