Virtual Interiorities

Abstract: A practice of the virtual offers to interior design a dynamic conception of interiority that transcends simplistic representative notions of space, recognising the inseparable relationship of space and time, as well as an understanding of interiority as lived experience and its attendant amenability to active interpretation and therefore design. Ultimately, a practice of the virtual facilitates an understanding of interior as a dynamic and ongoing network of relations, and interior design as individuating part… Show more

“…These two audiences can interact and meet within the virtual environment of the Indonesian pavilion, engaging with a riddle within the space. These two physical and digital worlds are essentially one experience where the digital materials of the space interact with our eyes or ears and construct the phenomena of our experience (Nash et al, 2021). The shared physical space creates a peculiar and unfamiliar atmosphere with unique interactivity, generating an uncanny sensation as the overlapping layers of interiority constantly shift in response to the presence of the viewer's body in the physical-virtual realm.…”

“…When these conditions are built up based on the understanding of cultures, the perceived environment becomes more impactful. Interiority actualises in a dynamic and ongoing network of relations (Nash et al, 2021) between users and environments-physical, perceived, and imaged.…”

“…Changes in technological and cultural practices (Daou et al, 2015) have affected our understanding of spatial concepts. Furthermore, the emergence of virtual environments (Nash et al, 2021) and the increased awareness of sociocultural diversity have led to ambiguity in defining spatial concepts. This essay introduces the Korean public bathhouse to illustrate the changing concept of interiority in general and the importance of diverse cultural perspectives in understanding architectural practices.…”

“…Building information modeling (BIM) is a representative technology based on three-dimensional (3D) modeling, through which decisions are made, and the information about space and resources used for construction is obtained [10,55,94,116]. Additionally, virtual reality (VR) is utilized to increase the sense of immersion beyond visualization of the space and provide the feeling of experiencing personalized space directly [2,60,63,87,[117][118][119][120]. To overcome the unreality of the VR environment, it is expanding to mixed reality (MR), combining the real world with the digital world.…”
