Based on data from the first study of Maori attitudes to assisted reproductive technologies, this article analyses the domaining of knowledge regarding biological and cultural reproduction. In particular, we examine the ways in which research participants portray whakapapa as an essential human and cultural resource, placed at the centre of considerations regarding relatedness and the appropriate use of AHR. The socio-political and historical circumstances of colonisation and Treaty settlement processes are investigated as contexts of 'possibility' that influence differing interpretations of whakapapa in relation to descent and contemporary kinship. In conclusion we suggest aspects of Maori concepts of relatedness and reproduction that warrant detailed ethnographic study in relation to contemporary political, economic and social change in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Datam do século XIX os primeiros relatos acerca de grupos para os quais a cópula não estava associada à reprodução. Numerosos autores se debruçaram sobre este problema, tanto dispostos a sustentar esta afirmação, quanto proferindo críticas ao tratamento de statements nativos como “afirmações sobre o mundo”. O debate segue este tom até o início da década de 80, quando Carol Delaney promove uma inversão radical nas linhas correntes de argumentação: em última análise o problema do nascimento virgem não diria respeito à ignorância dos nativos quanto à paternidade fisiológica, mas a uma ignorância dos antropólogos diante do próprio problema da paternidade. Delaney abre o caminho para uma série de outros trabalhos interessados em pensar a questão do nascimento virgem, desta vez associados à polêmica pública britânica da síndrome do nascimento virgem. O objetivo deste artigo é compor uma revisão teórica dos referidos debates, menos interessada nos meandros da polêmica e mais dirigida às suas torções, subprodutos e inflexões. Conclui-se com a constatação de que a ignorância antropológica envolta no problema do nascimento virgem resulta de uma adiantada suposição da universalidade da causalidade biológica para ontologias outras e da não atenção para o fato segundo o qual a maneira como os animais diferem dos humanos no ocidente é diferente daquela que os mesmos diferem dos humanos em outras cosmologias.

Concerns about the commercialization of genetics have spawned a debate over the symbolic logic and meaning of DNA. The assumption is that different meanings for DNA have social and ethical consequences. Genetic essentialism as an interpretive meaning for DNA is argued to encapsulate values of materialism and autonomy that make it compatible with capital accumulation. Whether or not genetic commerce actually requires genetic essentialism is an empirical question and this study proposes that it is not dif cult to nd non-essentialist genetics. Two paths of inquiry are adopted. First, the history and origins of the distinction between genotype and phenotype is revisited. This history of gene theory, in particular the effort to purge vitalism, is linked to DNA and the central dogma of molecular biology. Secondly, a rather specialized debate within anthropology about the meaning of mana is introduced. An analysis of de nitions for genotype and phenotype reveals a structure commensurate with the metaphysics of mana. Parallels are established between how the meaning of mana has been essentialized and the current efforts to x the symbolic logic of DNA.
