Virgibacillus zhanjiangensis sp. nov., a marine bacterium isolated from sea water

Abstract: A Gram-positive, endospore-forming, catalase-and oxidase-positive, motile, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterium, designated strain JSM 079157 T , was isolated from surface seawater off the coastline of Naozhou Island in South China Sea. The organism was able to grow with 1-15% (w/v) total salts (optimum, 4-7%), and at pH 6.0-10.0 (optimum, pH 7.5) and 10-45°C (optimum, 30°C). meso-Diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7, and the polar lipids were diphosphat… Show more

Now the genus is comprised of sixteen recognized species [ 19 , 22 ]. The members of the genus are noted for the presence of meso -diaminopimelic acid in their cell-wall peptidoglycan, MK-7 menaquinone, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol polar lipids and the G+C content is in the 36–43 mol% range [ 19 , 22 ].…”

“…At the time of writing, the genus Virgibacillus comprises 26 species with validly published names (http://www.bacterio.net/uw/virgibacillus. html); two other species, designated 'Virgibacillus zhanjiangensis' (Peng et al, 2009) and 'Virgibacillus natachei' (Amziane et al, 2013), have been proposed, but these names have not been validly published. Phylogenetically related genera are Oceanobacillus, Ornithinibacillus, Lentibacillus, Paucisalibacillus and Cerasibacillus.…”
