“…[3] as an agent affecting pigeons that caused visceral lesion such as necrosis especially in liver. Herpesvirus infection was frequently identified in young pigeons and free-ranging birds from different countries of Europe [12,16,20-22], Iraq [23], USA [1,13,15], Australia [4,14] and Canada [5]. The virus is antigenically related to CoHV-1 and was found in falcons and owls [1,4,5,12-16].…”

“…Pigeon paramyxovirus type 1 (PPMV-1) is an antigenic and host variant of classical NDV of chickens, which is responsible for ND-like infectious disease of pigeons, and some strains could be distinguished from classical NDV by hemagglutination inhibition (HI) tests and monoclonal antibodies [ 11 , 12 , 13 ]. The earliest PPMV-1 isolate, designated Iraq’78, was derived from a herpesvirus stock that had been implicated in viral encephalomyelitis of pigeons in Iraqi [ 14 , 15 ]. Some PPMV-1 strains identified by restriction cleavage site analysis of the F gene were classified as a distinct subgroup within genotype VI (sub-genotype VIb), which were responsible for the third epizootic in the 1980s and might derive from Middle East viruses [ 13 , 16 ].…”

“…Although cross reactions between PPDV and other avian H V have not yet been described, both cross reactive proteins (TANTAWI et al, 1979;NAKAJIMA et al, 1990) and genetic homologies between different species of H V (Krsfrl et al, 1988; GRIFFIN, 1989) have already been reported. For this reason, even though the developed ELISA assay exhibited n o cross-reactivity with proteins of the tested avian HV, further studies will be necessary in order to determine the exact specificity of the assay developed in this study.…”

“…To date, a large variety of avian herpesviruses (HV) have been isolated from many avian species (BURTSCHER, 1965;TANTAWI et a]., 1979;DHARMA and SUDANA, 1982; MUELLER, 1990). Since about 8,000 species of birds have been described up to now (WOLTERS, 1982), it is expected that more different types of H V will be isolated in the future.…”
