Viral Diseases on Cereals in Central Hungary

Abstract: In recent years viral diseases have become more frequent on cereals in Hungary. In the breeding nursery of the Martonvásár Institute, which contains stocks with very diverse genetic backgrounds, wheat suffered major attacks by viruses in 1972, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1986, 1990, 1996 and 1998. The winter barley plots incurred great damage in 1989 and 1990, while a large proportion of the durum wheat was destroyed in 1996. In 1982 barley yellow dwarf virus caused an epidemic in Fejér County and on many farms th… Show more

“…Among the most characteristic symptoms of this disease are growth inhibition, disorders in offshoot formation, reduced number of spikes, their partial or complete sterility, and in the case of strong infection, even total necrosis of the plants (Riedell et al 2003). An increased incidence of viral dwarfness of cereals during the last years in Hungary is reported by Szunics et al (2000), in Turkey by Pocsai et al (2003) and in the Czech Republic by Červená and Markytánová (2005). An enhanced occurrence of cereal dwarfness in Slovakia was repeatedly recorded in 2000, which was the reason for initiating the monitoring of this disease.…”

“…Every year, mixed viruses infections were detected in plants, BYDV-PAV being dominant (AY et al, 2008). In Central Hungary (SZUNICS et al, 2000), wheat suffered major attacks by viruses in 1972,1976,1980,1981,1982,1986,1990,1996,1998. BYDV and WDV are present in different proportion, depending on the year.…”

“…Aphids arriving in the field from perennial wild grasses, pasture grasses ripening maize, spontaneously germinated crops and other plants (reservoirs) to the freshly emerged cereals during the autumn, continue to move, feed and reproduce as long as temperatures remain above about 15 0 C (SZUNICS et al, 2000). The leafhoppers overwinter as eggs which have been laid in autumn on young plants of different cereals and weed grasses.…”
