Vigour, pruning, cropping in the grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.). I. A literature review

Abstract: International audienceWe present a series of three papers that aim at providing a synthesis of the information collected or obtained from 1956 to 1974 at the Station de Recherche de Viticulture INRA in Bordeaux. This work was continued and expanded along new avenues mainly by Carbonneau [CITE]. As it is, it endeavoured to study the relationships that prevail between traits which are easily assessed on the vine and are important in determining the production of a crop. It showed that to be meaningful, experimen… Show more

“…The development of the inflorescences (from initiation to differentiation) and the storage of reserves during the previous crop cycle partly explain year-toyear variations in agronomic performance (Bennett et al 2005;Goffinet 2004;Holzapfel et al 2006;Koblet et al 1996). The inflorescence primordia develop in the latent buds after budbreak in the previous year (May 2000; Pearce and Coombe 2005;Rives 2000), and their formation is particularly sensitive to the light and temperature conditions during flowering (May 2000;Sanchez and Dokoozlian 2005;Williams 2000). Moreover, severe water stress during the period of inflorescence initiation affects the bud fertility and reduces the number of future inflorescences whereas moderate water stress is beneficial (McClymont et al 2006;Ndungu et al 1997).…”

“…The major environmental factors in year n−1 that favor fertility in year n are light intensity and temperature. Other factors such as water supply, mineral nutrition, pruning mode, vine training, rootstock, or climatic events such as hail also affect fertility (Huglin 1958;Mullins et al 1992;Rives 2000). The effect of these environmental factors on fertility might be direct or indirect through vigor, plant winter reserves in relation to leaf/fruit ratio, bud position on the shoot, and/or cytokinin (Huglin 1958;Mullins et al 1992; Communicated by R. Velasco…”
