West Nile virus is a flavivirus transmitted by mosquitoes, mainly of the genus Culex. In Brazil, serological studies have already indicated the circulation of the virus since 2003, with the first human case detected in 2014. The objective of the present paper is to report the first isolation of WNV in a Culex (Melanoconion) mosquito. Arthropods were collected by protected human attraction and CDC light bait, and taxonomically identified and analyzed by viral isolation, complement fixation and genomic sequencing tests. WNV was isolated from samples of Culex (Melanoconion) mosquitoes, and the sequencing analysis demonstrated that the isolated strain belonged to lineage 1a. The finding of the present study presents the first evidence of the isolation and genome sequencing of WNV in arthropods in Brazil.

Bamboo internodes can serve as a breeding ground for a diverse mosquito fauna, some with relative epidemiological importance. The goal of this study is to determine the mosquitoes´ species found in the bamboo internodes at the northwestern region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. From September 2016 to August, 2017 immature forms of mosquitoes were collected from bamboos (Bambusa sp.), in the quarterly intervals (ten plants per collection) through 0.5 cm in diameter perforations on 40 internodes sides. After 30 days, the perforated internodes were cut out and their contents were taken to the laboratory where the immature forms of mosquitoes developed to adult stage were identified. A total of 367 immature forms of Culicidae were collected, however only 158 (43.1%) have developed to adult stage and were identified at a specific level. Eight species were identified: Onirium personatum (Lutz, 1904), Sabethes aurescens (Lutz, 1905), Sa. intermedius (Lutz, 1904), Sa. purpureus (Theobald, 1907), Shannoniana fluviatilis (Theobald, 1903), Trichoprosopon pallidiventer (Lutz, 1905), Wyeomyia limai (Lane & Cerqueira, 1942) and Wyeomyia serratoria (Dyar & Nuñez Tovar, 1927). Thus, the study showed the importance of this type of breeding in order to maintain the mosquito fauna in the wild areas in the studied region. The finding of the species On. personatum and Sh. fluviatilis was also reported for the first time in the State. KEY WORDS: Fitotelmata; Onirium; Sabethini; Shannoniana; bamboo; mosquitoes.

The aim of this work was at evaluating the activities related to the pharmaceutical assistance for tuberculosis in Santa Maria, RS, as well as its adequacy to the guidelines from Controlling of Tuberculosis in Brazil Handbook. Strengths and weaknesses from the actions developed of the Division of Tuberculosis throughout a descriptive observational study were identified in this research, from August 2012 to January 2013. It was noticed a meaningful search for the service, which was made by a diagnosis and follow-up of the treatment, using combined doses. Despite the monthly follow-up of the treatment for symptoms and sputum smears, and the adoption of standard procedures in order to reduce dropouts and relapses as the use of incentives, the adherence keeps remaining the biggest challenge. Based on the overview found, it is suggested the implementation of humanized follow-up practices, approaching patients and health professional during the treatment, with the intention of improving the adherence to pharmacotherapy and promoting life quality to the patients.
